Social networking sites face data cost crisis

A large number of social networking companies face crisis as digital advertising is on a downswing, revealed a research from consultants Deloitte.

The researchers said that the websites, which had survived the downward trend, might be forced to supplement their revenue with pay-subscriptions, selling members' data or extra financing.

The eMarketer revealed that the predictions came as growth forecasts for digital advertising had halved from 17.2pc to 7.2pc for next year.

According to the Deloitte research, with the revenue declining, the cost of storing electronic data has soared to more than 100m dollars per year for larger sites, as users increasingly want to upload photos and videos, which consume memory.

"The book value of some social networks may be written down and some companies may fail altogether if funding dries up," the Telegraph quoted Paul Lee, Deloitte director of research for technology and telecommunications, as saying.

He added: "Average revenue per user for some of the largest new media sites is measured in just pennies per month, not pounds. This compares with a typical average revenue per user of tens of dollars for a cable subscriber, a regular newspaper reader or a movie fan."

Estimates have revealed that there are more than 1,000 social networking sites on the internet.

Among these are almost 100 big players, which are host to 22pc of UK internet users, and the most popular ones, including MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, are likely to be more resilient in the face of the advertising slowdown.

However, many of the most popular social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, do not yet generate large profits.

"Neither (Facebook or Twitter) has yet demonstrated that it can make money on a scale that matches its number of users. Twitter has yet to sketch out plans to monetise its blogging site. Revenue has always been an issue for Facebook," said Madan Sheina, an analyst at Ovum.

While Facebook was valued at 15bn dollars, Microsoft at the same time took a 240m dollars minority stake in October last year.

"With the economy spiralling into a downturn that figure might seem to be exaggerated right now," said Sheina.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has claimed that for the next two years, they are focussing on growth instead of making money.

However, many signs indicate that the company is feeling the strain of the downturn, as it recently cancelled a plan to allow its employees to sell off shares early owing to the current economic recession. (ANI)

21: SEO (search engine optimisation) is totally concerned with the process of getting websites in organic search engine results. SEM is search engine marketing and involves paying search engines for placement in sponsored results this process is more commonly known as PPC or PAY PER CLICK.

Answers to top SEO questions - Part 5

The next batch of SEO questions is as below:

21. What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
22. What kind of strategies do you normally implement for back links?
23. What role does social media play in an SEO strategy?
24. What things wouldn’t you to do increase rankings because the risk of penalty is too high?
25. What’s the difference between Page Rank and Tool Bar Page Rank?
26. Why might you want to use no-follow on an internal link?

Answers are as below:

Answer 21: SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION AND SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING ;) the difference is SEO is the process you use in getting your pages to place well on search results. SEM involves complete online marketing purchasing advertising space on search result pages. Sponsored listings are SEM. Both are related though!

Answer 22: High quality, higly relevant, no bad networks or bad neighborhoods, link growth at rapid pace so that is may seems natural, no buying of links.

Answer 23: Social media apart from providing quality links and targeted traffic can most importantly help in VIRAL and WORD TO MOUTH marketign of your websites. Hence a strong marketing tool that can't be ignored.

Answer 24: I am strictly against anything that can be considered as SPAM be it a link campaign, use of CSS, hidden text or links, creating of doorway pages, META tags spamming or any similar act.

Answer 25: Tool bar page rank may be different from actual page rank of a page. the term is arrived from the SEO belief that google is constantly updating tool bar and one update is going somewhere at a data center of Google.

Answer 26: Nofollow can be used for internal links that you don't need to be indexed or followed for example: Link to shopping cart, login pages etc..

In the mean time I would also like to ask Google chat users to check lively with new features for chat with chat rooms. Visit Google homes blog

Answers to top SEO questions - Part 4

Here comes the part four of search engine optimisation questions and answers to them.

16. Rate from 1 to 10, tell me the most important “on page” elements
17. Review the code of past clients/company websites where SEO was performed.
18. What do you think about link buying?
19. What is Latent Semantic Analysis (LSI Indexing)?
20. What is Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval and what roles does it play?

Answer 16: content>title>alt>title attribute>keywords in anchor

Answer 17: ;)

Answer 18: I am not in favor of link buying except few exceptions

Answer 19: LSI indexing ries to overcome the limitations of "literal" search term matching . For example, if someone is searching for "hiking in Norhter Nevada" a literal search would only match the words used without taking into account words such as "hike", "hiked". LSI can give more relevant results because it does take word usage and context into account determining what a page is "about" rather than a strict reliance on literal wording.

Answer 20: regards to search results, it is a method that search engines such as google use to determine relevance of a page based on phrases actually used in a document. For example, if you have a page instructing people on wildlife photography, the search engine would reasonably expect to see terms and phrases such as "selecting a camera", "approaching wildlife", and "low light photo conditions". Related phrases will add to the relevance of a page where unrelated phrases will reduce the relevance of a page. This is one technique that Google is using to weed out "spam" sites.

SEMPO (Search Engine Marketing Professionals Organization) conducted yet another surveys regarding career in search engine marketing. According to the surveys conducted among in house Search Engine Marketin professional of SEMPO a career in search marketing can be very rewarding.

The results reflected the newness of the industry, but also showed that search is maturing. About 64 percent of respondents have five years of SEM experience or less. Very few entry-level SEMs reported salaries over $100,000; just 8.0 percent of those with 0-3 years experience. Making SEO friendly website

A quality design is the base of search engine optimization and it plays a vital role in SEO work for any site. So when it comes to doing business online, it’s all about the traffic (no. of users who visit your website). It will always be the lifeblood of any business venture working online, as there is no use of website when there’s no one there to see its pages. It doesn’t matter how successful your products be but if no one would be able to know about them or avail of your services then what’s a purpose of having such invisible dull presence. That’s why the strategies of traffic generation start at the very moment you are materializing the idea for the website itself.

So if you’re starting a company these days or want to expand your social atmosphere, I’m sure you’ve also thought about the composition of your website and having the SEO friendly standard. The best websites clearly and pleasantly convey your/your company’s message. This is true especially for web based startups as your website is your public face, your storefront and probably one of the most frequent contacts with customers.

It really doesn’t matter whether your website is of personal nature with few pages or an e-commerce website, having a well-designed site is very important. A good web design is not just about getting your website live and running. It’s about designing every aspect and structure of your website from the general look, accessibility and search engines stand point. May be you can’t believe but website design is something which really matters to your visitors. It gonna make all the difference in whether they leave your site or bookmark it.

Moreover a well-formed HTML website keeps the search engine spiders happy. According to the figures major search engines leads somewhat 76 % of the website visitors to a site, which means if these search engines cannot found your site, there will be a huge loss financially. That’s the reason many businesses pay thousands of dollars to SEO companies to be one of the highest ranked sites in search results. Therefore, it’s necessary to find out whether your website is search engine-friendly. The search engine spiders repay you by indexing your website, which will eventually lead your visitors to its goal, a conversion or a sale. A complete web design jumpstart your business right away.

Basically in a well furnished site important content is at the top of the page, where people can see the material without scrolling. Visitors should be able to get a clear picture of your site’s purpose. See as in newspapers headlines and biggest stories are put “above the fold” – meaning the top half of the page that you would see before opening the paper , same principle applies to web design.

All text links and graphic elements such as buttons and tabs should be easy to read and use .You doesn’t want your visitors leaving because they were not able to figure out how to get your Flash menu to work. A better presentation never switches from one style to another too often, as it may causes confusion to the visitors.

To build an effective web site, ensure that the information on your website is quick and easy to find .You always have to keep one thing in mind that many consumers still use dial up internet speed, and if a web site is not quick to load, then it is highly likely that the average consumer will not have the patience to view the content of your site.

A great designed site should have a fresh standard look that will suit the type of work/business it is intended for, but it shouldn’t detract from your ability to communicate effectively to your friend/customer.

Overall always keep the user in mind when designing every aspect of your startup’s web site. Everything you do should be designed with the user’s experience in mind. Internet in present time is a fast paced place with tons of new startups, and if you want your site to be relevant then you must have to act in the right direction. Getting a positive attention of visitors with a well designed and usable web site is the first step toward success.

Search Engine optimisation of PDF files

Ever thought of optimizing PDF files prepsent in your website. Lots of business have PDF files like sell sheets, brochures, white papers, technical briefs, etc.
below are fw tips to optimize your PDF files

1. Make sure your PDFs are text based. Okay, this first one is pretty obvious. However, we still find companies whose materials were designed in an image-based program. When the PDF is made using these programs, the PDF is an image; there is no text for the search engines to read.

2. Complete the document properties. It seems like the vast majority of PDFs are without specified document properties, the most important of which is the Title. The Title property, if present, almost invariably represents the words that will be displayed as the heading of the search result. It’s the equivalent of the html title tag. If you don’t complete the Title property, the search engine is going to generate a title from the PDF’s content, and it may not be what you would choose. We’ve all seen some pretty goofy looking titles to search results associated with PDFs. Not only do they look ridiculous, but they probably won’t get clicked. In the full version of Acrobat, go to File>Document Properties to specify the Title.

There are other document properties (meta data) you can supply, including Author, Subject, and Keywords, but presently these appear to have little search-related affect. It would be nice if Subject acted as the meta description to be displayed under the heading of the search result, but I haven’t seen this to be true. For now, however, I’d complete the Subject property as if it were a meta description. Perhaps in the future search engines will treat it as such.

3. Optimize the copy. Copy in text-based PDFs is no different than web-page copy. Optimize it.

4. Build links into PDFs. Make sure you include links in your PDFs, and pay attention to the anchor text used. Search engines do recognize these links. Not very often, but sometimes you’ll find backlinks in PDFs. Their limited occurrence, however, is likely related to the fact that most people don’t put links into PDFs; most people treat PDFs as static print documents. In addition to including links in PDFs for search-related purposes, there’s also a good business reason. Often, PDFs are passed along to others via email. Accordingly, a reader may be viewing the PDF in isolation (i.e., not associated with your website.) By placing links into PDFs, you give these readers an easy way to click back into your site, where you can further influence them.

5. Pay attention to the version. While search engines do “read” and index PDFs, search engines’ capabilities tend to lag new versions of Acrobat. Although Acrobat 8 is out, for now you should save your PDFs as version 1.6 (Acrobat 7) or lower to ensure search engines can index the content.

Not only is saving PDFs at a lower version good for the search engines, it’s also good for users. Not everyone has the latest versions of Acrobat Reader. Accordingly, I’d recommend saving PDFs as version 1.5 or lower. This way it will be good for search engines and most readers.

6. Optimize the file size for search. Don’t post a huge PDF for download. Not only is this annoying and unnecessary for site visitors, it’s also burdensome for the search engines. If it’s too big, the search engines may abandon the PDF before even getting access to its content. Using the full version of Acrobat, select Advanced>PDF Optimizer to “right-size” the document.

You may also want to enable the "Optimize for Fast Web View" option in the Preferences>General Settings panel. This allows the PDF to be “loaded” a page at a time, rather than waiting for the whole PDF to download.

7. Pay attention to placement. If you bury links to PDFs deep within your site’s file structure, they’re less likely to get indexed. If you want to use PDFs for high-ranking search results, links to those PDFs should be on web pages closer to the root level of the site’s file structure.

8. Influence meta descriptions for PDFs. For web pages, the meta description is what is displayed under the title in a search result. With PDFs, the search engines search the copy of the PDF and select something to display. While with PDFs you have less control of what is displayed as the description to the search result, you can still influence this. The best way to do this is to make sure that you have a good, optimized sentence or two near the start of your PDF. If these sentences correspond to the search term used, it’s likely that these sentences are the ones that will be displayed as the description under the search result’s heading.

9. Specify the reading order. As noted above, search engines search the copy of the PDF and select something to display as a description under the search result’s heading. Depending on how the reading order of your PDF is specified, this may lead the search engine to select some pretty strange stuff to display.

In a previous column, Organic Landing Page: A Case Study, I noted a search result for “transit seating.” That search result is noted below:

Admittedly, this is not a very enticing description, and it’s not likely to get clicked even if it ranks highly in the search results. Why did Google select this text to display? Because it’s the first thing Google read in the PDF.

Every PDF has a reading order. Similar to properly optimized web pages, you want to make sure that valuable content is read first. How do you know the reading order? With the PDF open and while using the full version of Acrobat, select Advanced>Accessibility>Add Tags to Document. Then select Advanced>Accessibility>Touch Up Reading Order. Then the reading order of the PDF will be displayed.

You can see in the image above that the reading order of the transit seating PDF does not start with valuable content. Rather, many extraneous items are “read” before the valuable content. That’s why Google displayed what it did in the search result. If you want PDFs to be optimized for search, make sure you understand the reading order of the PDF and use the Touch Up Reading Order tool to manage what the search engine will read first.

10. Tag your PDFs You can also add tags to your PDFs, similar to html tags. Again, with the PDF open and while using the full version of Acrobat, select Advanced>Accessibility>Add Tags to Document. Acrobat will give you a document report and recommend things you may want to consider changing. You’ll have the ability to tag headings, alternate text for images, etc.

11. Pay attention. Every time you open a PDF, make even a small change, and save it once again, major unseen things may change. The reading order may change automatically. You may inadvertently save it as a higher version. It may get saved using the default size setting instead of a properly optimized size. If you’re going to further optimize existing PDFs, may sure you check all of these things before posting a new version of the PDF.

Search Engine Optimisation - Search search engine on search engines

Search Engine Optimisation - Search search engine on search engines

Hi,
Today was juss getting bored from my rutine work and started searhin fro dummy keywords in search engines. From dummy keyword I started searchin yahoo, msn n gogles ets over search engines, then I searched fro the term search engine in all three search engines. While examining the results found that no searchengien was ranking at top over its own serps. google was at top on yahoo and msn whiel in google SERPS it was wikipedia search engine page at the no one post. goolge ranked itlself at no 5 one step below MSN. Yahoo ranked itslef at no 2 below google whereas MSN was not at top 100 (I didn't looked after that) at its own search results.
Examine the results you'll get to know some difference in search algorithms of three search engine. I have soem clue now.

Google Phone getwhat u want before you search

Google filed a patent which includes predicting phone calls and actions based upon time and location. Its being predicted that this technology could even debut in the iPhone when it is released in June.

In the patent Google discusses how all the data is stored on Google’s servers and queries are sent whenever the user is searching for something or typing a message. Presumably the queries would be sent over some kind of mobile AJAX interface. This patent is truly groundbreaking in what the application could do. Imagine that you are planning a night out in London. At 6pm Google could predict you are looking for a restaurant and, given your history of looking for directions to Chinese restaurants every week, would select an array of suitable places for you to eat.

At 9pm you would turn your phone on again and Google would know you wanted bars near the restaurant. At 11pm Google again predicts you need a list of local taxi firms.

Yahoo Vs Google : yahoo growing bit faster

According to marketwire press release yahoo is growing a bit faster than google. Most of the people in Search Engine optimisation and search engine marketing field must be surprised to read this.

visit http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=206586

If we compare the market share and groeth then definitley yahoo is growint faster.According to the report "Google with 3.035 billion searches in December, up 22.6% from the year before, and Yahoo with 1.412 billion searches, up 30.1% from December 2005".

The whole chart:

Top 10 Search Providers for December 2006,
Ranked by Searches (U.S.)

Provider Searches Growth Share ofSearches

Google Search 3,035,617 22.6% 50.8%
Yahoo! Search 1,412,904 30.1% 23.6%
MSN/Windows Live Search 499,946 -9.7% 8.4%
AOL Search 362,140 7.8% 6.1%
My Way Search 141,527 4.7% 2.4%
Ask.com Search 128,452 17.2% 2.1%
EarthLink Search 31,930 17.6% 0.5%
Dogpile.com Search 30,487 2.1% 0.5%
Comcast Search 26,931 N/A 0.5%
NexTag Search 26,835 123.2% 0.4%

Looking at the numbers for December 2004, December 2005, and December 2006, all reveals some interesting results.

Google:
December 2004: 1,414,778
December 2005: 2,475,895
December 2006: 3,035,617

Yahoo:
December 2004: 711,857
December 2005: 1,085,918
December 2006: 1,412,904

You can clearly see that, although Google gained 560 million users in the last year (down from 1.06 billion the year before), and Yahoo gained 330 million (down from 370 million the year before), Yahoo gained a higher percentage over the previous year than Google did. Google had roughly double the market share of Yahoo in 12/04, then 1.4 times the market share in 12/05, and is now back to double the market share in 12/06. In a sense, Yahoo has erased recent losses, getting itself at least back to where it was two years ago, while Googles growth has slowed.

If things continue at this very specific pace, this is what the next few years will look like:

12/2007:
Google: 3.495 billion
Yahoo: 1.802 billion

12/2008:
Google: 3.855 billion
Yahoo: 2.052 billion

12/2009:
Google: 4.155 billion
Yahoo: 2.262 billion

12/2010:
Google: 4.315 billion
Yahoo: 2.432 billion

12/2011:
Google: 4.375 billion
Yahoo: 2.562 billion

12/2012:
Google: 4.335 billion
Yahoo: 2.652 billion

12/2013:
Google: 4.195 billion
Yahoo: 2.702 billion

12/2014:
Google: 3.955 billion
Yahoo: 2.712 billion

WOW gr8 ha na Lets see yahoo is going to do sometihng ot increase groth in future :)
Meanswhile there something wrong with new bloger I am getting problem with dat :(

Yahoo! Pipes

Visit yahoo pipes @ http://pipes.yahoo.com/

What is yahoo pipes : Pipes is a hosted service that lets you remix feeds and create new data mashups in a visual programming environment. The name of the service pays tribute to Unix pipes, which let programmers do astonishingly clever things by making it easy to chain simple utilities together on the command line.

Philosophy Behind the Project: There is a rapidly-growing body of well-structured data available online in the form of XML feeds. These feeds range from simple lists of blog entries and news stories to more structured, machine-generated data sources like the Yahoo! Maps Traffic RSS feed. Because of the dearth of tools for manipulating these data sources in meaningful ways, their use has so far largely been limited to feed readers.

SEO : Long term vs Short term

Different Search Engine Optimisation Companies provides different types of SEO services some of them are short term like they'll optimise a given site for given set of keywords over a fixed ammount of time. After that client may sign up for a monthly or annual maintenace programme. Other SEO package may include long term SEO stretegy like optimisation of a websites for given keywords and also adding more pages+ keywords. A client may hire a company for any of SEO package for his/her website depending upon nature of business and SEO needs etc.......

NOw both short term and long term SEO serviceshan there own brnrfits n drawbacks. A webmaster can consider both the cases and ask the Search Engine Optimisation Company
fro which suits better.

Short term SEO :
PROS:
1. Pages gets fully analyzed, optimized and rolled out within a few weeks or months.
2. No long-term contracts.
3. No large re-occurring fees.

Cons:
1. Nothing gets rolled out until its all complete. If the contract calls for a large number of keywords or pages to be optimized you might be in for a long wait.
2. Some important keywords many not get optimized as the contract has limitations as to how many pages and keywords are to be optimized.
3. Newly popular phrases don't get optimized without making an additional optimization purchase.
4. Reporting and analysis is limited.
5. Link building is limited.

Long-Term SEO:
Pros:
1. New keywords are always being found and optimized into your site.
2. Ongoing analysis, maintenance, reporting and consulting.
3. Ongoing link analysis and building
4. You know who is ultimately responsible.
5. No fees for just keeping the status quo or a few reports
6. Pages are rolled out as soon as they are ready, no waiting for "everything" to be completed.
7. Constant analysis for new trendy keywords that can bring in targeted traffic.
8. Ongoing link building efforts
9. Ongoing reporting and in depth performance analysis

Cons:
1. Some important keywords may take a while to get optimized and rolled out.
2. Larger ongoing fees.
3. Long-term contracts often required.
