Reason for traffic drops
Google official blog made an interesting post on the possible reasons fro drop in the traffic of a website. There were some interesting things mentioned which most search engine marketing experts may think be the cause for traffic dip.
First issue discussed is duplicate content, the post says unless the duplicate content is being used to manipulate search engine rankings its not be flagged as violation of google terms and webmaster guidelines. Using affiliate links be the reason for traffic drop was also completely denied.
However interesting post was made regarding the site publishing malicious software code, code injection and reported attack website message. If your website contain such malicious code then be prepared for a sudden and huge dip in your website traffic. But no need to worry you may grt rid of such situation easily by following instructions at google webmaster central

Alexa ranking myth simplified
My previous posts were related to Alexa but not really were about what alexa ranking is all about. In the earlier post SEOv Blog @ Alexa I mentioned about my SEOv blogs ranking at Alexa and in the post Alexa widget not supportedI simply put the screen shot of Alexa graph. Here in this post i will share what alexa ranking is all about and how can webmasters improve there sites alexa rankings.
Alexa.com is a website from Amazon.com that collect information about the websites and rank them according to the traffic of the websites. The major point here is that traffic is determined of the people who have installed alexa toolbar only so the ranking is only of the internet users who have installed Alexa toolbar in their web browser. However Alexa still remains one of the greatest parameter for the authority of any website, better the alexa ranking better is the site. Many organization still has Alexa rank as qualifying parameter for placing ads, buying links and or hiring the services you offer.
That was all about the importance on alexa rankings will post on how to improve alexa rankings later.

Image Search - Dilemma of optimizing images
Lots of SEO companies include image promotion in there SEO proposals and services list, but it seems that not each company actually cares about image search and also clients hardly ask or check if there site appears for any image search result pages. I strongly believe that you can get a good bunch of traffic from image search results. Reasons are lot and only one thing to support is that it won't harm you unless you want to protect your images and that an be easily done through robots file exclusion.
As I was thinking about image promotion I just searched in google images about google (See results). To my surprise there was no Google.com in the results. In fact you would be more surprised to know that google didn't appeared in first 10 pages for its own search on its own search engine.
Same was the case when search term Yahoo and MSN was used over google image search.
TO go further in this research I now tried to Yahoo image search. Yahoo also disappointed as same results n google, yahoo or MSN site was found in the image results for their own search terms.
Then I thought to skip search on MSN but a short coffee break gave me the energy to check msn image search also and finish this post at SEOV blog. Results were MSN were also the same. Luckily I get google images as referral. It don't show the keywords but I am happy my blogs and sites are appearing somewhere in image search results.

This plugin aims to take care of this issue for you until the folks at WordPress change things up.
SEO friendly and HTML valid subheadings - Some themes for WordPress will confuse your sub-header tags based on the page they are to be displayed on, but this plugin will automatically reset them to make them more SEO friendly by moving them down one spot in the hierarchical tree. TGFI.net SEO Wordpress Plugin - This particular plugin will do most of the usual SEO work of optimizing titles and keywords, but it adds a unique twist as it is mainly directed at people who use WordPress as a CMS.

Predicted how SEO is goin to be in 2009.
Google more matured and more recent PR and algorithm updates from google. Don't be surprised if you see monthly updates by google.
Little or no penalization: Pagerank penalties, link penalties etc are more hyped in the industry as i have hardly seen websites being penalized by search engines.
More emphasize on personalized search
More investment in SEO both organic and inorganic
Ranking is not dead but SEO will be more focused on conversion rather than mere rankings.
More SPAM as where there money online there's SPAM
Social media becoming more popular

Social networking sites face data cost crisis
A large number of social networking companies face crisis as digital advertising is on a downswing, revealed a research from consultants Deloitte.
The researchers said that the websites, which had survived the downward trend, might be forced to supplement their revenue with pay-subscriptions, selling members' data or extra financing.
The eMarketer revealed that the predictions came as growth forecasts for digital advertising had halved from 17.2pc to 7.2pc for next year.
According to the Deloitte research, with the revenue declining, the cost of storing electronic data has soared to more than 100m dollars per year for larger sites, as users increasingly want to upload photos and videos, which consume memory.
"The book value of some social networks may be written down and some companies may fail altogether if funding dries up," the Telegraph quoted Paul Lee, Deloitte director of research for technology and telecommunications, as saying.
He added: "Average revenue per user for some of the largest new media sites is measured in just pennies per month, not pounds. This compares with a typical average revenue per user of tens of dollars for a cable subscriber, a regular newspaper reader or a movie fan."
Estimates have revealed that there are more than 1,000 social networking sites on the internet.
Among these are almost 100 big players, which are host to 22pc of UK internet users, and the most popular ones, including MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, are likely to be more resilient in the face of the advertising slowdown.
However, many of the most popular social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, do not yet generate large profits.
"Neither (Facebook or Twitter) has yet demonstrated that it can make money on a scale that matches its number of users. Twitter has yet to sketch out plans to monetise its blogging site. Revenue has always been an issue for Facebook," said Madan Sheina, an analyst at Ovum.
While Facebook was valued at 15bn dollars, Microsoft at the same time took a 240m dollars minority stake in October last year.
"With the economy spiralling into a downturn that figure might seem to be exaggerated right now," said Sheina.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has claimed that for the next two years, they are focussing on growth instead of making money.
However, many signs indicate that the company is feeling the strain of the downturn, as it recently cancelled a plan to allow its employees to sell off shares early owing to the current economic recession. (ANI)

You can visit Yahoo search scan to know more.

Answers to top SEO questions - Part 4
Here comes the part four of search engine optimisation questions and answers to them.
16. Rate from 1 to 10, tell me the most important “on page” elements
17. Review the code of past clients/company websites where SEO was performed.
18. What do you think about link buying?
19. What is Latent Semantic Analysis (LSI Indexing)?
20. What is Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval and what roles does it play?
Answer 16: content>title>alt>title attribute>keywords in anchor
Answer 17: ;)
Answer 18: I am not in favor of link buying except few exceptions
Answer 19: LSI indexing ries to overcome the limitations of "literal" search term matching . For example, if someone is searching for "hiking in Norhter Nevada" a literal search would only match the words used without taking into account words such as "hike", "hiked". LSI can give more relevant results because it does take word usage and context into account determining what a page is "about" rather than a strict reliance on literal wording.
Answer 20: regards to search results, it is a method that search engines such as google use to determine relevance of a page based on phrases actually used in a document. For example, if you have a page instructing people on wildlife photography, the search engine would reasonably expect to see terms and phrases such as "selecting a camera", "approaching wildlife", and "low light photo conditions". Related phrases will add to the relevance of a page where unrelated phrases will reduce the relevance of a page. This is one technique that Google is using to weed out "spam" sites.
